Furnace Not Running? Things to Check
Most homeowners don’t give the furnace in their home much thought. To some extent this is an understandable consequence of the fact that furnaces are typically installed in parts of the house that are rarely frequented. Like a car, a home furnace needs to be given some periodic service to keep it running at maximum efficiency. Of course when a car needs servicing you will get immediate feedback because most people drive a car every day. This is not the case with a home furnace, however, and it is possible that the unit could stop working. If that happens you can check a few things before calling a service representative who can work on your furnace
Open up the circuit breaker box in your home and find the switch that controls the power for the furnace. If that switch has been thrown into the off position, you now know why your furnace will not provide heat. In this case it is a good idea to call for a heating technician to inspect your system, however, because some hidden problem could be what caused the breaker to be thrown.
A heating cycle begins when the thermostat detects that the room temperature has dropped below a set temperature, and this unit then calls for heat from the furnace. If the batteries in the thermostat are dead, however, the cycle cannot be initiated. So change those batteries and see if that solves the problem.
Air filters can also cause a furnace to shut down. If yours is particularly dirty then there will not be enough air entering the heat exchanger, and the system will shut down. Replace your air filter once or twice each heating system as necessary. Ideally the air filter should be checked once a month.
It is a rare occurrence, but sometimes people inadvertently bump the service switch on the side of the furnace and turn it off, so that should be checked. Also, make sure the valve controlling gas flow into the unit is open.
Once you have done all the inspections described above, it is time to call in professional help if your furnace still does not provide heat. In fact it is a good idea to have a furnace tune up performed every heating season to keep your unit running at peak efficiency.
